Midnight Mass
>>Stream on Netflix<<
Mike Flanagan redeems himself after his confusing effort with The Haunting of Bly Manor. This series follows a small community of die hard Christians on a isolated island. The lead is Riley Flynn who is tormented by a woman he killed driving drunk in the first episode. He ends up going to prison for a few years but when he comes back home, the embrace of the community feels cold, especially from his father. The cast does a great job of giving the viewer this unsettled feeling, not to bring you to the edge of your seat but to make you ask questions to see what lies beneath the surface. Things pick up great steam once Father Paul comes onto the island saying the previous Father fell sick and had to be replaced. Paul has a very eerie vibe about him that doesn’t get explained until midway thru the season. I don’t want to spoil too much, but this show is a great ride from a director who constantly proves himself to have a vision.
Halloween Kills
>>Stream on Peacock<<
Following the stellar 2018 sequel of the 1978 masterpiece by John Carpenter (both named Halloween), Halloween Kills had very big shoes to fill. While this installment into the Halloween series doesn’t necessarily check all the boxes, it is entertaining. Seeing Michael go berserk on the townspeople of Haddonfield was a sight to see. I’ve never seen him this gruesome ever, and I’ve watched every Michael Myers movie in existence. The problem with the movie is that it follows too many worn-out horror movie tropes, such as trying to stop an immovable force and poor decision-making by every single character in the movie. At one point the townspeople start chasing someone they think is Michael Myers, but only a handful of people inside have actually seen him. It’s definitely more frustrating than it sounds, and makes the movie drag for a bit leading up to the final act. After the fake Michael jumps off a ledge to his death, the mob of people ask themselves, “Who’s the real monster?” The fact that they had to ask, when they are still facing an obviously demonic entity, had me rolling my eyes. The monster is still the monster. How dumb can these folks be?
That's it for now yall, I'll write more soon so stay tuned. Happy Halloween everybody!
