The zoomers had fun with breakbeats, now they’re descending deeper, venturing into the zone of beats so hard and fast they’ll mash your brain to blissed-out pulp. Even more agitated, abrasive, and addictive, a new wave of viral electronica is reviving hardcore electronic strands like jumpstyle, hardstyle, and gabber. Much of it sounds cursed, like a laptop vomited it out in a malfunctioning fit. But there’s also unexpectedly angelic tunes with sweet samples and Auto-Tuned vocals. Ballistic kicks have infested everything from emo digicore and “indie sleaze” to sigilkore and movie soundtracks. There’s DSBM with so much juddering jumpstyle chaos it hits more like sonic BDSM. Time to enter the rabid rave abyss.
