All About that Crunch: The Mariah Flips of Sig (Soicygoth) and Carlito

sig.png

Rewind a few years back, and Ohio producer (and vocalist?) 16yrsold was one of the stars of SoundCloud rap. He produced for Lil Tracy, Chxpo and was seemingly on the verge of big thangs with D Savage that never fully materialized. Recently he's been publishing on soundcloud.com/soicygoth and dropping a ton of heat there with Zellyocho, PPG Casper, and most intriguingly Carlito, whom I suspect is 16yrsold himself on vocals, indulging in some very welcome Mariah Carey flips.

First came Carlito's blown out Gecs-ish rework of "Touch My Body" (2008) and now we have "Obsessed," a remix of a Mariah heater that came out in 2009. The producer on the latter is deliverthecrush whose TrakTrain is fire and is down with Surf Gang in NY, one of my current favorites. The former is by @prodbyfav, whom I'd never heard of and seems to be affiliated solely with Sig.

The Mariah nostalgia is right on time (I'm debating buying my sister in law the new autobiography for Xmas). And the crunch on the vocals and the beats, that borderline staticky clipping, is frankly hitting. Love it a lot.

Along with a few other freestyles from Carlito, as well as all the other hot music on the profile (mostly produced by 16yrsold it seems), it's a world that I've been diving into a lot on headphones for walks, in the car on grocery runs, just whenever I want something slammin. I've been feeling the return of the sample in rap music (see the new ILLFIGHTYOU album) and these super blatant ones, treated all fucked up, make me smile at their expert deployment and pure illegality.
